NEW SINGLE // Sylvan Esso - 'Coffee (Helado Negro Remix)'

Will Weightman

Sylan Esso.jpg

Amelia Meath and Nicholas Sanborn have been coined the "best random pairing in pop music." Together the duo creates Sylvan Esso. An unexpected collaboration, the two were both working with separate projects when they happened to be in the same place at the same time, playing the same venue. Their first single 'Play-It Right' was originally sung with Meath's other musical endeavor, Mountain Men, but Nicholas Sanborn heard something he wanted to create his own. From there the magic began and Sylvan Esso was born.

The duo released their self-titled debut album on May 13, and are currently touring the UK with tUne yArDs. After their UK tour, they will be back in the States for a US Tour. The two have received infinite buzz from NPR, The New York Times, Stereogum, and many more.

'Coffee' is the primary release off of their album and features Meath's playful vocals and Sanborn's perfectly placed underbelly. Helado Negro's Remix of 'Coffee' features Amelia's whimsical voice, while finding a different quality to the already stellar single. As the summer hits the USA, this is one to play with your sunglasses on and frisbee in hand.

NEW SINGLE // Andy Bull - 'Talk Too Much'

Will Weightman

Sydney stalwart, Andy Bull, has released a tidy stream of singles since reappearing from a three-year hiatus last year.  Following triple j Hottest 100 entries ‘Baby I Am Nobody Now’ and ‘Keep On Running’, Bull’s latest offering is ‘Talk Too Much’ – the third single from his forthcoming sophomore album Sea of Approval

Abounding with retrospective synthesisers and heavily sampled instrumental performances, ‘Talk Too Much’ is an accomplished self-produced effort, which sees Bull solidify his position as a seminal Australian talent in 2014.

Andy Bull’s sophomore album Sea of Approval will be released on July 11 via Island Records.

NEW SINGLE // Cln - 'Better Than'

Will Weightman

The past two years has seen an absolute landslide of talent in the Australian electronic scene. Listeners, both international and local, have all bared witness to a new era of downbeat, atmospheric beats and creative live performances. Just when you think the scene might be at maximum capacity, bright young artists keep evolving from mosh-pit punters with big dreams to successful producers on-stage. Cln (Callan Alexander) is no exception to this trend, with a successful remix of Kilter’s “They Say last month and his brand-new original "Better Than".

Callan has delivered a simple, yet uplifting track with waves of reverberated drums, vocal chops and crispy synths. It’s certainly a recipe that Australian listeners have heard before, but with a catalogue of edits, remixes and just a single original track released a year ago, Cln’s improvement is unquestionably clear. Through a little tender love and care from Hype Machine, FBi and Triple J, the future holds bright for the young 18 year old from Brisbane.

Look forward to his debut 5 track EP next month.

BEST OF THE INTERNETS // Japanese Wallpaper – 'Waves (ft. Pepa Knight)'

Will Weightman

At just 17 years old, Gab Strum melted the collective minds of Australian and worldwide listeners with his breathtaking debut single “Breathe In” late last year. With influences from the masters of ambience Sigur Ros and James Blake, it no doubt offered many a sunset wind-down for Australians last summer.

Teaming up with Jinja Safari front man Pepa Knight, Strum has yet again delivered an eclectic, thawing mix of ambient melodies, soothing keys and calming vocals. It’s delicate, simple and yet profoundly peaceful – a firm testament to his growing talent.

It will be interesting to see how Strum, as a multi-instrumentalist, will translate the intimate energy of his productions into a live performance – a challenge that all downbeat, ambient electronic artists must overcome for successful gigs and tours.  If you’re lucky enough to live near Melbourne, head on down to The Grace Darling Hotel in Collingwood this Sunday the 18th of May for the official single launch.

Sydney garage punks Straight Arrows are back with a new single called 'Petrified' - the first track off their forthcoming LP 'Rising'.  The accompanying video was shot by Owen Penglis and Royal Headache’s Lawrence Hall, and is edited by Straight Arrow’s Angela Garrick. The video and song go hand in hand down a tunnel of fuzzy garage pop - even some humour is thrown in at one point, with Owen (wearing a hard as nails leather) bitch-slapping some dude with what looks like a piece of meat attached to his shoulder.  Yep, weird or rock'n'roll?  You decide. 'Rising' is out 13 June on Rice is Nice Records and you can catch Straight Arrows in the flesh when they embark on their 'Rising tour'.

13 June - Wombarra Bowling Club, Wollongong
14 June - Newtown Social Club, Sydney
20 June - The Brightside, Brisbane
28 June  - Fishbowl, Newcastle
12 July - Northcote Social Club, Melbourne

Jay Watson plays drums in Tame Impala and guitar in POND, and has confirmed that he will be releasing his debut solo LP under the moniker of GUM. The leading track from the album is a very cosmic cover of the popular British band Genesis' single 'Misunderstanding' (originally released in 1980). The Full record entitled 'Delorean Highway' will feature a collection of 10 songs described as “paranoid pop songs, mostly about falling in love and all of the things that he thinks are going to kill him.” You can pre-order here or wait till it's out on the 30th of May.
